In this film, web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explore issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride. As we hit the halfway point between Lake County Film Festivals, we are still digging our way through somewhere between 400 and 500 submissions. These Early Shorts are the early favorites of these submissions; the films that we take to friends’ and family’s houses to show off all summer. The exact line-up will not be announced until a couple weeks before the screening.

In the heat of the 2004 election race, actor Dan Butler – best known as Bulldog on the TV sitcom “Frasier” — begins production on a one-man show about controversial political advisor Karl Rove. His initial goal is to topple the Republican administration, but as he delves deeper into his character, Butler finds himself falling in love with the person he set out to destroy.

After seeing some very strong work this semester from CLC students, we wanted to make sure they had a showcase for their work in 2009. This will feature work from CLC students made both in class and out of class. Time permitting, we will also show work from area high school students and/or work from other area colleges.
