It Came From Kuchar
by Jennifer M. Kroot
Mar 3 - Mar 8 2010

College of Lake County
Long before YouTube, there were the outrageous, no-budget movies of underground, filmmaking twins George and Mike Kuchar. At the age of twelve, they became obsessed with Hollywood melodramas and began making their own homespun melodramas with their aunt’s 8mm camera. In the early 1960’s, alongside Andy Warhol, the Kuchar brothers shaped the New York underground film scene. Known as the “8mm Mozarts”, their films were noticeably different than other underground films of the time. They were wildly funny, but also human and vulnerable. Their films have inspired many filmmakers, including John Waters, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Wayne Wang (all are interviewed in this film). Despite having high profile fans, the Kuchars remain largely unknown because they are only ambitious to make movies, not to be famous.

It Came From Kuchar is a hilarious and touching story of artistic obsession, compulsion and inspiration. It was a selection at the South By Southwest Film Festival and won Best Documentary at the Chicago Underground Film Festival

NARRATIVE FEATURES:

Friends (with benefits)
by Gorman Bechard
Mar 3 - Mar 8 2010

College of Lake
Meet Chloe and Owen: best buds since their sandbox days. Now, in med school as they attempt to balance the weight of their studies, his job, her band, their parents, their friends (their sanity), they find little time for relationships…but lots of time for the desire. One fateful day, a brave Owen proposes the “perfect” solution: Friends (read: no messy relationship stuff)…with benefits (read: insanely messy sex stuff). “Perfect,” that is…if the two hadn’t always been secretly in love with one another So what DOES happen when two close friends decide to secretly blur the lines dividing friendship and relationship…and the rest of their tight knit group of friends finds out? The answer: complications arise. A LOT of complications. In fact, to quote their therapist, “It’s brought down empires; imagine what it can do to a group of friends”.

Friends (with benefits) is a tale of sexual identity and true love; of controversy and relationships redefined; a thinking person’s romantic comedy (with belly-laughs).

Night Before The Wedding
by David Brainin
Mar 3 - Mar 8 2010

Colege of Lake County
Straight-laced William Shay is tying the knot in less than 24 hours. His closest friend, Bronco, has a night of hard-partying, drinking and women planned, but all William wants to do is play Pinochle with his parents and call it an early night. Will's best man, Bobby, lures Will to the party, with the expectation that he would give his greetings and return to his planned quiet evening. But before he realizes it, he has given everyone an impromptu speech, had a few drinks, and is slowly seduced into partying. In the midst of all the fun, Will realizes how happy he is to be with his best friends. As the evening progresses, there is a constant push and pull on Will to see how far he will bend his rules and if it will wind up breaking him in the end.

While Night Before the Wedding is a bachelor party comedy, there is plenty of thoughtfulness and drama involved to make it feel like a very satisfying film.
